when i try to copy a photo from e-mail into my pictures library it shows up as symbols not a photo, why cant I key in the file type?

I received a photo via-e-mail. I clicked on 'save image as', told it to save the photo to my pictures library. The file type was listed as document. I tried to enter the jpg file type but it would not let me, I was only able to select from their offerings. What can I do to save this photo to my pictures library?
