Firefox 4 is crashing my PC

Posted

Hi, This problems kind of weird and serious enough for me to stop using Firefox 4 until it’s fixed. Here’s what’s happening:

Firefox 4 will run quite happily most of the time, but if I close Firefox and say play a game or use a hardware accelerated app like IE9 or (I think) Visual Studio 2010 (WPF, so hardware accelerated). Then run Firefox 4 again it will freeze the entire PC and cause me to have to hit the reset switch. Absolutely everything locks up. At this point Firefox has not even displayed a window.

The only clue I have to anything is the cascade of services that fail in the last 16 seconds of life my PC has.

It always starts with the DHCP client service failing because the Ancillary Function Driver for the Winsock service failed due to a devise attached to the system not functioning. Then the following services fail: DNS Client, because NetIO Legacy TDI Support Driver failed because a device is not functioning. TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, fails because Ancillary Function Driver for Winsock failed because device is not functioning. Network Store interface Service fails due to NSI Proxy Service Driver failed. Workstation service fails due to dependency on Network Store Interface Service. IP Helper, Ditto

Well, you get the picture, at first I thought my network port may be playing up but I was either on the internet at the time or had just been using it, for instance I had exited a game and the Steam client had just synced.

The fact that the screen freezes as soon as I double click on the Firefox Icon and that if I don’t use any other apps that are hardware accelerated Firefox seems happy to be exited and restarted all evening.

My system is Windows 7 64-bit, using an ATI 5970 with 11.4 drivers, (though I still had the problem with the 11.2 drivers).

Hope you can help, I can’t run my favourite browser there’s a fix or workaround.

Kind regards,

Drum.

I have this problem too, and it's Firefox 4.0 causing this issue, since my computer does not lock up in any other way. When browsing pages (particulary Facebook), suddenly FF stops responding and then everything else crashes. Only way to recover Windows is by manually shutting down the computer. Event Viewer does not report anything unusual besides the fact that Windows did not shutdown correctly.

I have 2 addons in FF, NoScript and Adblock Plus. My PC has more than enough memory and harddrive available. I'm running Windows 7, x64, Ultimate. 50GB free in disk space, a Nvidia 260 GTX video card with latest drivers.

Hi, I have a similar problem. My relatively recent PC hasn't had any major issues, but since the 4.0 update, it has already crashed 3 times : screen gets completely frozen and nothing responds to anything. When Winamp is also running, the sound is also affected, like a broken record with weird sound effects etc. The only solution is to manually shut down the computer and restart it.

Each time I was actively using FF, though it gave absolutely no warning, mostly with a video (like Youtube or other sites).

I have Adblock Plus 1.3.6, FireFTP 1.99.3, Greasemonkey 0.9.1, Java Console 6.0.24 ; running on Windows 7 64bits, Home Premium, 4Go RAM, more than 265Go of free disk space, and a Nvidia GeForce GT 220 also with latest drivers.
