How can I get the search shortcut (cmd-k / ctrl-k) to open a new window?

Currently, if my search bar is not visible, cmd-k (or ctrl-k) opens my preferred search engine in the current tab. Is it possible to rather open a new tab using this keyboard shortcut? This behavior is not changed by changing the value of the preference that would otherwise cause the results of a search bar search to open in a new tab. I've so far found no guidance on this subject.
