Google apps tab does not open search results in a new tab.

I thought apps tabs were permanent, and links on them opened in a new tab even if not set by the page in the apps tab.

I did a search on a google apps tab, then when I clicked on a result, it opened in the same tab -- so now that tab was changed to a new site. I closed firefox, and reopened it, and the apps tab was not google, but the search result site. Is there a way to ensure that apps tabs stay the same?
