Why don't applications settings work?

Whenever I choose to open a file, Firefox launches a dialog box that asks “What should Firefox do with this file?” There is a checkbox that says “Do this automatically for files like this from now on.” When checked, the dialog displays “Settings can be changed using the Applications tab in Firefox’s Options.” However, even after changing the Applications settings in Firefox’s Options, Firefox continues to ask what it should do on each and every file I try to open. It’s as if it ignores the Applications settings altogether. Is there no way to simply accept the security risk and have it open the files as per the settings? Why have the settings if they don’t work?
