Cannot bookmark pages after updating to 3.6.15

Just updated from 3.6.8 and cannot bookmark new pages. When it used to bring up a window with title for bookmark and where to put it, now it does nothing. Recent bookmarks shows a long list of BBC IOT programmes (In Our Time) which I have never accessed or bookmarked. Bookmark drop-down list only appears when Firefox has just been started - otherwise I get Bookmark this Page, Subscribe to this Page, Bookmark all tabs, Organize Bookmarks, Bookmarks Toolbar. - But only the last one does anything.

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

Try disabling the AVG Security Toolbar extension. If not that, see this:

I have tried:-

  1. 1 With AVG Toolbar Disabled.
  2. 2 With Firefox in safe mode
  3. 3 With AVG toolbar disabled and Firefox in safe mode.

None of these make any difference - still cannot add bookmarks.

Yes, followed the instructions in the link: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Bookmarks_history_and_toolbar_buttons_not_working_-_Firefox Deleted Places.sqlite and Places.sqlite-journal from profiles> *****.myname Restarted Firefox, used Bookmarks > Organise Bookmarks > Restore (to about a week ago) and all seems well. Note- before using Restore Bookmarks only the top level bookmarks were accessible when adding a bookmark. Thanks for your help.
