Firefox 4 RC1 crashes after upgrading from 3.6.15 during first start up

I decided I wanted to move over to Firefox 4 RC1 after using the betas on one of my other machines. I didn't have any problems installing, however when I went to run Firefox, it just hangs at this screen:

It's been like that for several hours, using 25% of my CPU (1 full core of my quad core) and 19612K of RAM (although a couple of hours ago, it was only 19608K). I did have tabs open when I closed FF before the upgrade, something I was hoping wouldn't be an issue. I also have the following add-ons: -Camelizer -DownloadHelper -FoxyProxy Standard -DownThemAll -SkipScreen

I also know that if I force close the firefox.exe process, it refuses to 'start' back up. Installing 3.6.15 back over the top works fine, and I'll be doing that for the time being. I want to prevent a full reinstall of FF, but I will if absolutely neccesary.

Chosen solution

I realised that I kept the cookies folder instead of deleting the entire Fx folder. So I did it, and it works ! So, try a full clean install, it would maybe work for you too.

Hi there.

Exactly same problem here but with french version.

Tried to shutdown firewall, then antivirus, then both, during installation, then at first launch, and so on... I tried to change the profile used, but then it triggers this error, even at first launch : http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_in_use I did a clean install at every try, though : uninstalling 3.6.15, ccleaner-ing, installing 4 RC1. And same in the other way at every fail : uninstalling 4 RC1, ccleaner-ing, installing 3.6.15 (even if I'm using 3.6.13 right now).

It seems it's an isolated problem, because I don't find other people having similar issues, except this one : http://support.mozilla.com/fr/questions/791182 But I don't think it's linked because firefox doesn't even launch properly.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Please. =x

Ok, so after failing to update to RC2 or the final release, I tried to remove everything except for my profile, but it still happened. However, I believe I've found the culprit.

In the profile folder, remove cookies.sqlite and cookies.sqlite.journal, then firefox should start normally. This worked for me, whether it works for anyone else, I'm not sure.
