Yes, that will work. Basically, I had done the same thing after I removed the LastPass toolbar in the middle that was blocking the address bar and the search bar from being adjacent to one another. The LastPass Toolbar wasn't even visible there and only trial and error with the settings on the browser alerted me to it. LastPass is a great add-on but I fail to see what's so important about the LastPass Toolbar. The add-on still works regardless. I'm using Firefox 6.02 now and looking forward to another update or the next best browser. Anything beats Internet Explorer 8 or 9. I don't care about the hype I hear from Microsoft shills surrounding its "superior" security. It still sucks.

I'd installed the LastPass extension and, unbeknownst to me, it inserted a LastPass toolbar (?) between the navigation bar and the search bar. I didn't visibly see it but, when I unchecked LastPass Toolbar from the list available when you want to customize, I was then able to re-size the navigation and search bars again to my content. They're now both of equal size. It works for me. I never use the LastPass toolbar so I'm not missing it.

I previously tried this without leaving the "customize toolbar" option window of toolbar open. I couldn't move any of the buttons. Then, I left the window open and it worked. I'll have to make a note to myself that the "customize" window must be open to move the buttons. I prefer all the buttons on one side or the other instead of all over the bar and your asssitance is appreciated.
