i get an empty box that says 'downloads' and no document when i click to download email attachments

i can View some email attachments but in about 1 of 3 tries i cannot actually DOWNLOAD email attachments. i get an empty 'Downloads' box with no document displayed. then when i minimize the Firefox Gmail queue and go to my Downloads file, the document will sometimes be there.

in other words i have to leave and/or minimize the Firefox Gmail screen and go to the Downloads file to call up and edit the Word file/s i tried to download from the email.
