My MAC will not accept any email address for setting up Sync account

In the Firefox Sync Setup, as soon as I type in any character or number into the Email Address field , it immediately comes up with a red cross and note "Invalid email address". If I go to Go back then Create New Account the cross remains. If I go to Cancel, it clears everything, but as soon as I type in a letter or number again, the "Invalid note comes up again.
