When I ask Firefox to remember a password, it neither responds to the request nor remembers it. What's wrong?

When Firefox automatically asks whether I want it to remember a password, it doesn't seem to recognise if I hit "Remember". The message remains at the top of the tab and I can only get rid of it by closing it or saying "Not Now" or "Never".

If I click "Remember" and close the message or the tab, the next time I try to log into the same site, I find the password has not been remembered. No passwords appear to have been saved on this computer.

I'm using Firefox 3.6.13 on an HP Compaq running Windows XP.
