When I click links embedded in other applications (Mail and Word, specifically) it switches automatically to Firefox (my default), but doesn't actually open the link. What am I doing wrong?

I have tried to download updates in the past and get a message that I don't have administrative privileges, even though I am the owner and sole user of this computer. I wonder if there is something in an update that will fix the problem with links not opening.

If it helps, I'm on a 27-inch iMac with the most current OS and using Microsoft Office for Mac 2011.
