Why does Firefox save my application setting to open Adobe PDF docments but then ignores it and instead asks me to find an application every time?

Under Tools Options Applications, Firefox 3.6.13 settings for opening Adobe PDF documents is correctly set to use PDF-XChange viewer, the only PDF viewer I have installed. Recently every time I open a PDF document this setting is apparently ignored at I am asked to browse for an application to use. Why does Firefox not follow the stored setting?
