Why links in Microsoft Outlook emails do not open Firefox?

FF 4.0b8 is my default browser and MS Outlook 2003 my default email program. When I open an email containing a link to a website and click on it, no FF window is opened. This problem did not exist with Internet Explorer.

As an alternative solution, I've tried copying the website link from the email, but then I find that it can't be pasted on an open FF window either.

Although this behaviour is very strange, I notice that you have a beta version (of Firefox) installed, which by definition is buggy - unless you are testing or are a developer you should really use the latest stable version (currently 3.6.13, http://www.mozilla.org/).

Of course I agree that such a "bug" is not acceptable. Whereas it is difficult to help here, it is impossible that Firefox users would accept buggy software either (i. e. they won't have this behaviour).

Are you sure Firefox is default? That's weird that you can't paste! Are you pasteing on the address bar? OK, so highlight the URL, click copy, paste it on Firefox (any where on the white, blank tab.)

Of course Firefox is my default browser. And of course I've tried what you've said, to no avail. Moreover, when I highlight and copy any text from a webpage in FF, it is impossible to paste it on any other application, whether it be Word, Outlook, MS Money...

I fear that my "experimentation" with FF is going to end soon. Lots of fancy add-ons, but pretty catastrophic operativity in terms of the elementals. MS Internet Explorer may be more archaic, but it sure is less buggy.

Thank you for the insight. In order to install version 3.6.13 of FF, should I uninstall 4.0b8 first, or will 3.6.13 simply install right over it?

Sorry for the delay, have been quite busy recently.

Yes, I would first uninstall your 4.x version. Although not explicitly required, shut down the Computer OS after each uninstall and (re)install process, expecially with Win XP (just a personal experience to "solve" some issues every now and then).

Thank you for the suggestion. I "downgraded" to the non-Beta FF 3.6.13, and things are working a lot more sensibly now.

i have this issue also.. not just copy-pasting from FF to other app (notepad, MS word, etc) but also vice versa...

here's another thread about pasting into FF 4 beta.. http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/774327

(i wrote the link letter by letter because copy-pasting from the address bar to this text box doesn't work :p )

I installed FF4 on 2 boxes, one with outlook 2010 and the other with outlook express. On both boxes I cannot open a link in an email and I didn't have this problem with FF3.x.x. I am running version 4.0 of FF not a beta. I should have followed the general rule of never installing anything with a version ending with a "0" grrrr

Interestingly, I recently installed FF 4 and I am not having any of these problems anymore. I guess between the Beta version a few months ago and the final one now available, these bugs have been taken care of.

I had the same problem with both FF 3.6 and 4.0 and MS Outlook 2007. I removed the Office 2007 Plug-In and now the links work.

I am running Firefox 6.0.2 This problem started right after the latest Firefox-suggested update. Firefox has been giving fits lately, freezing up at least twice a week.

This seems to take place right after an upgrade of either Firefox or some Windows component. Here is a solution that has worked for me. If that is not the problem (but check that one first), then exit both Outlook and Firefox then start them up again.
