When sync first came out i added it to firefox and provided my own pass-phrase. Now, when I investigated why my machines were no longer syncing I discover that I cannot enter my key. I am continually referred to a key generation window.

How do I enter my original account rsync key?

Switched to SyncPlaces which provides the same facility without the intrusiveness.

Whatever the reasons behind this, changing someones encryption key behind their back, thereby disabling their account, and then forcing them to use a random jumble of letters and numbers in place of a memorable phrase is not, I repeat, not very considerate.

Most security beaches occur at point of origin or point of destination. Forcing people to manually record long random strings of characters for use in pass phrases measurably decreases security. A quick look at the bottom of the keyboard or top right hand drawer of most of your non IT co-workers will yield interesting results.

  • The Sync Setup process automatically creates a random sync key and shows you that key.
  • You can backup that key to make sure that you do not lose it.

You can inspect the "Sync Key" on the computer where you first installed Sync via "Tools > Options > Sync".

  • Click on the Manage Account button to display more options, then click on the "My Sync Key" link. to backup the current sync key.
  • Click on the Manage Account button to display more options, then click on "Connect" to change the Sync key.

I discovered all this for myself.

The point is I do not wish for a completely randomly generated key. I do not want to regenerate a random key. I do not wish to use a random key at all. I want to use the key I originally assigned to my account.

Further, I do not wish to save a randomly generated key where it might be compromised or lost. I want to recall the key from my own memory. A feat which is patently impossible for a non-savant to accomplish using a randomly generated key such as is provided.

In short, I wanted the original implementation of key assignment and usage returned.

Sorry, Mozilla has changed the Sync service earlier this month, users can no longer create their own Sync Key. I am having no problem with the Sync Key I created back in July, but when I created an additional new account this week I had to use the "generated key".

So I gathered. Which is why I have dropped the service.
