How do I open a BLANK TAB w/o having a search bar in it?

When I opened a "new tab" before the recent updates on my desktop computer w/Vista, I was able to start typing the web address & it would show up in the address bar.

Now, when I do that, it starts to fill in the address bar while the new page is loading, but when it's completely loaded, it finishes my typing in an search bar on that page...

I want the "old" way back!!!

This happens EVERY time I open a new tab.
