when i close the box, a new page appears which says firefox security alert and starts scanning and then recommends me to install certain things. the link of the page which appers for scanning is http://online-alert-policy79.co.cc/?id=11&t=b

after the scan, it shows lot of threats on my computer and the site asks me to install certain software's that Mozilla recommends . however i saw that it was scanning in my C drive . But my main drive is D. so i doubted..

Don't answer that pop-up or you will be infected by malware. What you see is only an animation and not a real scan. The results are meant to persuade you to buy and download software. If you want to perform a malware scan then do that with known and trusted programs.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database before doing a scan.

After getting the message "Mozilla security ..." I searched my system by malwarebytes (quick) - no problems found, then by Spybot S&D -- no problems found, now, while searching once more witch malwarebytes (but full search now) I get the message "Mozilla security ..." again.

It looks as if neither malwarebytes nor Spybot finds this malware.

Do you get that pop-up while you are in Firefox?

Clear the cache and the cookies.

  • "Clear the Cache": Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
  • "Remove the Cookies": Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

You can also delete sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Profile Folder to remove stored data from the previous session.

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder

If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.

I got this pathetic message, but knew it was false, as security messages are not sent to you from an internet page. I closed it using the task manager and ran a McAfee scan. However, I worry that somthing might have been downloaded onto my computer. Does closing the pop-up give you malware?

Note that I did not respond to the pop-up and closed the webpage as well.

No, you only get infected if you download and run the .exe program and your anti-virus software didn't catch it.

You will see that same animation every time that you visit such a web page that hosts such an infection.

ok, thanks.

I clicked on where it said "protect" and then when it wanted me to download a program I realized it was a fake and deleted it, but could it still have installed malware or a virus/trojan on my computer if I didn't download the program, since I did click on "protect?"

I ran my antivirus afterwards and it didn't show anything, but could it have missed it?

I also asked how to restore my "Refresh" icon/button. It disappeared. Does anyone have an answer?

DottyO -- Did you run several anti-virus/spyware programs or just one? It's recommended you run a few since each one catches different kinds of viruses/spywares.

I think you are using FF4 -- The "Refresh" button has been incorporated at the far right end of the address bar. If you want to put it back somewhere in the Toolbar, you can do this:

View > Toolbars > Customize

and DRAG the "Refresh" button into the window, then drag it back out to wherever you want in the Toolbar.

Some useful tools for supplemental scans are:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

SUPERAntiSpyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/

(Actually, I see these were posted in the first reply in this thread.)

I don't have FF4 because when I tried to update to that, I got the msg. that it was not available on my server, whatever that means.

DottyO -- I replied to your other post:

https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/815050

and it showed that you have FF4. Go to: Help > About

and it'll show you what version do you have.
