My Bookmarks Toolbar layout keeps changing

Posted

I have re-enabled the Bookmarks Toolbar in Firefox beta 7. The layout I want to use for this toolbar is: - on the far left, the 'Bookmarks' button that opens the pulldown menu (ie. not the one that open the bookmarks sidebar) - centered on the bar, the 'Bookmarks Toolbar Items'

Now, the problem is that I can create this layout without any problems, but invariably, after a while, the 'Bookmarks' button will jump to a spot on the right side of my browser. I have yet to find any rhyme or reason as to when and why it does this, so far it seems rather random.

What I do notice is that, if I then try to put it back where it should be by opening the 'Customize' screen, it is shown to me in its default position next to the adress bar, ie. neither where I want it to be (and where I put it before) nor where FF was showing it to me just a second ago.

It's all quite weird but also frustrating... Any ideas what's going on?

There are two different Bookmarks "buttons" in Firefox 4.0-betas. One resides in the Palette until the user places it on a Toolbar; that one opens the Bookmarks Sidebar. The other is supposed to appear when the Menu Bar is hidden (when it is in the default location) - or when the user moves it from its' default location.

Related to the later button, I'm using the 4.08pre nightlies (about a month newer than the 4.0b7 release you are using) and with no extensions installed, it always appears in its' default location (to the right of the Search Bar) when Customize is open, but it does appear where I moved it to when Customize is closed. I have had no problem with it not staying there when I place it on the left side of the Bookmarks Toolbar, when Customize is closed - including after multiple Firefox restarts.

IMO, you either have an extension causing that problem, or there's a Bug related to that button that has been fixed since the 4.0b7 was pulled from the nightly branch. My suggestion is to create a new Profile and see if that still happens.
