Missing recent pages history drop-down menu alongside navigation arrows

Posted

As the summary goes:in Firefox 4.0 beta (actually using the latest release, the issue however was there from the first install) the small widget to toggle the recently viewed pages menu ,beside the back\forward button (see picture below) ,is missing:already tried "Restore Default Set" in the customize box, also starting in safe mode and choosing the "reset toolbars and controls" option,to no avail. This profile however acts weird as far toolbar resetting and lost buttons ,however even when everything else is restored to normal this little triangle isn't visible-if that means something,a second clean profile recently created for testing doesn't have this issue.

Does that triangle appear if you start Firefox in Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode ?

Your above posted system details show outdated plugin(s) with known security and stability risks.

  • Shockwave Flash 10.1 r53
  • Java Plug-in 1.5.0_02 for Netscape Navigator (DLL Helper)

Update the Java plugin to the latest version.

Update the Flash plugin to the latest version.

Yes,that small triangle is still there both in safe mode and using the newer profile,it has however never been visible with the default profile, since the first install as far I remember. As I've said earlier, neither resetting the toolbar while in safe mode or restoring default settings in the customize toolbar window has fixed it.This profile-allegedly due to extensions- has been acting up for a while,it often loses toolbar custom settings and sometimes freezes on restart,I've filed a bug for this https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=590381 but I can't isolate which extension causes the problem,as disabling some of them temporarily solves the issue, then it happens again randomly. Also, even when it's working perfectly fine (apparently),this small triangle\button is never visible. BTW,I think you mentioned the plugins as a general advice, they couldn't cause this issue directly, right?

Question owner

I've just noticed that this small drop-down arrow has now disappeared also on my other Firefox 4.0 profile (used just for testing purposes),right after the last upgrade to b6:given that my main profile has coincidently also started to misbehave again,is it a possibility that updates may occasionally break something,i.e. corrupt a profile? Is there anything I can check to determine what is causing these problems?

Can be this issue: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Corrupt_localstore.rdf

Question owner

Thanks-actually,that was what I was leaning towards, still resetting toolbars & controls from the Safe Mode window results just in a temporary fix, by any chance would manually deleting localstore.rdf be more effective or is it basically the same thing?

The arrow for the menu has been removed: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=582485

You can still access the menu by right-clicking the widget or clicking and holding until the menu appears.

Question owner

Thanky you, still unclear to me why it wasn't there since the first install of beta2,but it was visible in second testing profile I created later on,then disappeared within this second profile as well:does it get removed with updates? Anyhow, very bad idea, that feature is highly useful IMHO,now I will have to install some addon like TabHistory .

Push and hold the unified back/forward button or right-click it to see the browsing history drop-down.

And maybe vote for this bug It kinda puzzles me that you have to go nuts with troubleshooting and bug hunting when they sneak in new features without notice, how hard would have been,to add this tooltip or add a line in the release notes, this was no under-the hood-feature,people actually use it.
