Why would Firefox for OS X load the homepage instead of a clicked hyperlink in my email program?

When I click a hyperlink in an external program that launches Firefox I get the following behavior:

1. If I click a hyperlink when Firefox IS NOT running, then the homepage always loads. (My GOAL is to fix this behavior.)

2. If I click a hyperlink when Firefox IS running then the page loads properly in a new tab.
