Firefox not loading any Google websites; all other sites load OK

I have been using Firefox on my HP laptop w/ Vista since the day I received the computer without incident. Last night, I attempted to "Google" something on the search bar and my Firefox froze on a white screen; the bottom toolbar read, "Transferring data from www.google.com"

I then tried to access my Gmail email --- no luck. Google maps would not load, Google.com loaded but I was unable to search, etc etc etc.

I have upgraded to the most recent version of Firefox (3.6.xxx, whatever was available as of today), I have done a Norton and a Malware Bites scan, I have upgraded flash/java...I have even cleared my cache, placed Google in the "Allow" list in Cookies, disabled add-ons --- NOTHING WORKS. (And yes, I even restarted my computer, too.)

I do NOT want to have to use Chrome or IE. I want to still use my Firefox, but if I can't fix it by the end of today, then I guess I'm out of luck. HELP ME FIREFOX! You're about to lose a loyal user because I cannot access my (VERY IMPORTANT) email accounts!

Anyone have a solution?

Try clearing your cache and cookies.

  1. Open the Tools menu', then selectClear Recent History
  2. In the Time Range to clear: drop-down, select Everything.
  3. Click the arrow next to Details to display the list of items that can be cleared.
  4. Select both Cookies and Cache
  5. Click Clear Now

That did not solve my problem.

Apparently, this isn't a new issue; wish there was a way to get to the bottom of this from either Firefox/Google's end. I can't even search Google's help site!

See these topics. I am not lying/alone nor am I stupid. I'm pretty tech savvy, so I have tried all obvious solutions. Nothing works at all. Beginning to wonder if Google is hijacking Firefox users to have them move to Chrome?

Firefox 3.6.3 does not allow access to GMail

Firefox 3 freezes loading gmail at mail.google.com

And for the record, I tried "Safe Mode" and Gmail would not load. All other Google sites seem to be loading for now...but I still CANNOT access Gmail. It stays at the loading screen.

And I do NOT want to have to use the HTML version for the rest of my life. I utilize labels and other Gmail features; using HTML Gmail would be useless for me!

Just tried to do a Firefox Live Chat and was RUDELY cut off by the supposedly "friendly volunteer." He would not listen to me and said it was a Google problem. Yeah, right --- how do you then explain how everyone else can access Gmail on their browers (Firefox included!) and I am having problems. Sounds like a Firefox issue to me!

I'm going to have my roommate download Chrome for me on her flash drive so I can upload it here. (Can't even search Google to find Chrome and can't load a Google site!)

Sorry, Mozilla. Your "support team" blows.

Your plugins list shows outdated plugin(s) with known security and stability risks.

  • Shockwave Flash 10.0 r42
  • Java Plug-in 1.6.0_10 for Netscape Navigator (DLL Helper)

Update the Java plugin to the latest version.

Update the Flash plugin to the latest version.

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes). See Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems and Troubleshoot issues with plugins like Flash or Java to fix common Firefox problems

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears. You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode start window to disable all extensions. You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

Somehow my post disappeared. Gmail does not load on Firefox (3.6.8). My computer has Windows XP. It does load on IE so it's a Firefox problem.

Cor-el's answer to everything seems to be "start FF in safe mode and update your extensions"...

At any rate, you can always bypass the AJAX-y version of Gmail and use the basic HTML interface by going here:

It loads instantly and should work in any browser.

Thanks. It's puzzling how gmail worked for several years on Firefox and now does not.

http://mail.google.com/mail/h does not load either. Why is it that the only site not loading for me on Firefox is gmail? Especially after it worked for several years? I'm not a technical person and did not add any extensions. The only changes made were the normal Firefox updates.

btw, www.google.com does load very quickly, so it is just gmail.
