What is "java console" on the tools menu ? How do you use it?

I am a newbie to java and assume java console is an editor, I can write code with. Am I right? When I choose "java console" on the TOOLS menu, nothing happens. What gives?

No.
The Java Console is not an editor, but meant for developers to troubleshoot Java applications.
That extension is not compatible with current Firefox versions.
