Hello, I'm a Firefox Contributor! If you are experiencing the issue stated on the title, we need your help!

We haven't yet discovered the true cause of this, so please DON'T ASK FOR HELP HERE!

However, we can use your help to find what is causing this and IMPROVE Firefox, if you let us give you a task that will provide us with valuable information! Before you reply to this, we need to confirm the details of this issue, DO NOT reply here if your issue doesn't match the following:

  • Happens every time that Firefox is opened.
  • Happens in Windows.

Also, one of the following has to happen:

  • Firefox window is not responding just after opening Firefox and requires it to be killed on Task Manager OR ,
  • Firefox window never shows up but the process "firefox.exe" is listed on Task Manager.

If you have this exact issue, please reply with:

  • your operating system architecture (64-bit or 32-bit?)
  • a debugging session
  • your e-mail

so we can follow up with you to ask you for more information. I repeat, we DON'T HAVE a solution for this, so please don't tell us you have the problem without giving us the data we ask, and don't make other unrelated questions.

You might ask, how do you give us a debugging session? Instructions:

  • You need to install the following software, "Debugging Tools for Windows". Download it from http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/DevTools/Debugging/default.mspx (if you own a 64-bit version of Windows, follow the link on that page to the 64-bit version). Then install it, the standard settings in the installation process are fine
  • To begin debugging, run WinDbg from the Start menu. (Start->All Programs->Debugging Tools for Windows->WinDbg) Next, open the "File" menu and choose "Open Executable...". In the file chooser window that appears, open the firefox.exe executable in your Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox).
  • You should now see a "Command" text window with debug output at the top and an input box at the bottom. You will have to enter commands in that input box, COPY THEM as they are written, ONE BY ONE, pressing enter after each one of them (this is IMPORTANT):

.sympath SRV*c:\symbols*http://symbols.mozilla.org/firefox
.symfix+ c:\symbols
.reload /f

  • Now wait a second, this might take a while... Copy the following commands after...

.logopen /t c:\firefox-debug.log
.childdbg 1
.tlist
sxn gp
|* lm

  • Now run Firefox by opening the Debug menu and clicking Go. Right after, Firefox should start running and the problem should happen again. As soon as you verify the problem is occurring, open the Debug menu and click Break. Then, copy these commands:

|* ~* kp
|* !analyze -v -hang
|* lm

  • After these steps are completed, find the file c:\firefox-debug-(Today's Date).txt on your hard drive. Now, you have the data in that file, open it and copy the contents into a new pastebin URL at http://pastebin.mozilla.org/
  • After creating the pastebin, be sure to save the CUSTOM url that links to your report.

Finally send us the data by replying here and indicating the URL of the pastebin, with the rest of the information we are asking above.

Same problem here. Win7 32.

Only the process appears, but no browser window.

Just a wild idea i had. I do have one other issue with the same computer that also shows the 3.6.4 problem. It has to do with the folder app in Picasa. I mean the one where one can decide which folder needs to be scanned or ignored and so forth. Every time I start this Picasa freezes instantly. I tried numerous things already. Perhaps both those processes are somehow somehow connected. Just a wild guess though.

I will send the debugging info over the weekend.

Any news on this?

Has anybody with the problem found a solution or tried Firefox 4 Beta 1?

I've tried a standalone version of FF4 Beta now. It's the same problem: process is running but no browser window appears.

So here comes my debugging info. I've made two logs for comparison. The first one with the working version 3.6.3 and the second one with version 3.6.6. This one is considerably shorter as only the process is running. No window visible.

3.6.3: http://pastebin.mozilla.org/750708

3.6.6: http://pastebin.mozilla.org/750721

I would be glad if whoever understands this jumble could give me some feedback if this debug info is helpful or not.

Many thanks.

Hello, I have been receiving the same problem using windows 7 os 32 bit, the real strange thing for me is after FF is started my computer basically acts like my ram, graphics card, and processor don't exist.

it took me about 15 minutes to get task manager open and from there I can't even get FF closed. ultimately just restarting windows gets me back to normal. until this issue is resolved I'm stuck on chrome...

Same problem with 3.6.7 --- as expected.

No window ... only process is running.

Installing 3.6.3 works instantly.

We're not following this thread anymore (it's from more than a month ago and 4 Firefox versions have been released since.) I'll lock it. FatBaron: please start a new thread.
