When I visit certain websites, I see "read www..com" on the status bar instead of "Done". What does that mean?

I have also seen "stopped" on the status bar. Does that mean that the page has not been fully loaded? In both instances I can't see anything wrong on the page I am trying to load.

It's happened on different OS (XP, Vista), and on different machines with different add-ons, on Firefox 3.6.3, 3.6.4. Thank you.

Hello Anonymous.

What it says Read... in the status bar, it's because Firefox is reading from the said site. In other words, it's downloading information (the web page itself) from the site in order to present content. This download process is how web browsers display web content, although the terminology employed in the status bar may vary. The "read" stand is usually fast and stops as soon as the page is understood by the browser to be fully loaded. At this moment, the status bar will display a Done message.

If you stop the loading before it's completed, a message Stopped will appear.

I also get the Stopped message on the status bar. It happens when I'm trying open pdfs. Doesn't always happen and usually within a specific web site. Firefox 3.6.3 It was fixed (I thought) with a plug inm, but now it's happening again.

Lisa, Firefox alone cannot read PDFs. You are using a plugin to read PDFs inside Firefox. You need to contact the developer of the plugin for support, if you are having problems with it.

Thanks Morbus. Actually, the "read" stays until I hover my mouse over something interactive (then I would see "done"), otherwise it would remain "read www..com" forever. And, even if I don't stop loading the page, it just seems to stop itself, so I was curious. Cheers.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes). See Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems and Troubleshoot issues with plugins like Flash or Java to fix common Firefox problems

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears. You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions. You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

Thanks cor-el. I am not able to connect to the internet in safe mode. This is a problem that I have been wanting to look into. I think I can try your suggestion in normal mode then, but the difficult part is, the problem is not always reproducible. Thank you.
