Thunderbird downloads all email to hard drive for viewing, so the messages are there when offline.

Ok thank you.. What is the difference for me between pop3 and imap?

Briefly, POP accounts download to the PC and delete from server. IMAP accounts retain the messages on server. Ideal when accessing from more than one device, such as a PC and a phone.
