Chosen solution

The -- at the beginning indicates the signature block, but it appears a pdf file is attached. Only picture, html and text files are valid. Signature settings are in Account Settings.

I suggest closing thunderbird and rebooting and see if this repeats.

This was indeed the issue, I removed all signatures and now the new message is clean. Many thanks
