As far as ad blocking goes, I'd recommend uBlock Origin: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/

Also, might check Tools -> Settings -> Privacy and Security and check "Block pop-ups and third-party redirects" which is just under the Permissions section if it is not already checked.
