Excess memory usage - Processes keep running after tabs are closed.

I often keep firefox running for several days at a time, usually with 2 tabs open. This current tab generates 15 processes in Windows Task Manager, and uses 1.2MB memory.

Opening two more tabs (news sites) took it up to 57 processes (3.9MB, or 88% of memory)

The problem is that over time, even when I close unused tabs, many of the extra processes don't stop running.

What can I do about that? Is there a setting I need to adjust for this?

Adding extra memory is not an option on this machine.

Thanks.
