Could you try using the settings wheel at the lower left of the button bar? Select the option to show/hide the sidebar:

Then, if you have the Sidebars button on your toolbar (for example, near the Reload button), you can use that to show/hide the sidebar. Otherwise, you can open/close a specific sidebar (such as Ctrl+B twice for Bookmarks).
