Sometimes I can't delete emails from my Inbox, but only temporarily; then later it's OK

Are you on IMAP or POP? If IMAP, the server is probably processing what you've recently done in TBird, and when it's finished (that can take a few seconds if you're on a busy server like GMail), it's ready to process your new actions.
