Can not unpin ads

more options

Firefox keeps pinning ads for random pages that I have never visited. It happens inconsistently, but sometimes when I open Firefox there will be a random ad page pinned. Even if I unpin it, and reopen Firefox the same ad page will be pinned again. I have tried looking it up in settings but could find anything, that make it pop up.

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough, but this problem happens every time i open Facebook page. As soon as I open Facebook same ad keeps getting pinned to the tab bar. Even if i close Firefox and reopen it will be there, unless i unpin it. But again as soon as I open Facebook or messenger it will get pinned. The ad URL even says Facebook.

Then you need to contact FB as that is coming from them not Firefox. If adblocker Addon don't work then not much else can help here.

There have been a couple of add-ons that were mentioned recently as creating unwanted pinned tabs, but I cannot find those threads, unfortunately. So here's how to investigate manually:

(1) Test in Firefox's Troubleshoot Mode

In that mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates all extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is running:

You can restart Firefox in Safe/Troubleshoot Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)

and OK the restart. A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

If Firefox is not running:

Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.) A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

Note: Don't use the Refresh without first reviewing this article to understand what will be deleted: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

Any improvement? Assuming so:

(2) While Still in Troubleshoot Mode, Review Your Add-ons

You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. On the right side, find the "Manage Your Extensions" heading.

If there is at least one extension before the next heading -- "Recommended Extensions" -- please continue:

Then cast a critical eye over the list below that heading. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything coupon-related, or Facebook-related, or suspicious-looking, or that you just do not remember installing or why? If in doubt, use the ••• menu button for the questionable add-on to remove it. For your privacy and security, don't let mystery programs linger here.

Any improvement?
