Deleted Message Window Stays Open

Since the update to 102.2.22 a deleted message window doesn't close. It just stays there until I "X" on the upper right. For years now, whenever I deleted a message the next messaage in the selected folder appeared in the window. That no longer happens, it just stays there. But it does disappear from the list of messages and appears in the Trash folder. This happens for both gmail and yahoo mail messages.

This DOES NOT happen in troubleshooting mode. Then it works as it used to. I have only two extensions, Manually sort folders and MyPhoneExplorer. In normal mode I have disabled both but the problem still happens. Is there something else that troubleshooting mode does?

I also have this problem since updating, such that I can end up with many deleted message windows open which clutters the workspace. Is the advice to run in troubleshooting mode for the present?

I am using Windows 8.1 on this desktop and Windows 8.1 on a tablet computer. Thunderbird on both seem to act odd but in different ways. I was wondering if Thunderbird is neglecting Windows 8. I will have to upgrade this desktop to 11 but the tablet isn't compatible with Windows 11 so it will have to stay.

(1) Are you using Windows 8? (2) Does troubleshooting mode help? I haven't tried it. (3) Does it seem that messages with images might delete (and move to the next message) sometimes?

Is anyone working on a solution to this problem? it has been 3 months. I backed off because I thought it might be a Windows 8.1 problem but today I just upgraded to Windows 10 and Thunderbird has the same problem.

If I have a message open and I click the "Delete" button on the message header OR if I tap the Delete button on my keyboard, the "Delete" button on the message page becomes faded out and the message disappears from the list of messages but the message window stays open.

This doesn't happen on my Windows 8.1 tablet. If I click Delete the window closes and a new window opens with the next message or with the last message in the message list.

Is there a control or setting that will fix this problem??????

AFAIK Troubleshooting mode does 2 things: disable add-ons and hardware acceleration. If your computer's graphic drivers are somewhat buggy, this could explain it. Try to disable it (Settings / General, all the way down). If it does not solve it, I'd try to disable all scroll options (but that's a long shot).

Well, I did some more troubleshooting. I found that I have this problem only when using Unified Folders. If I enable All Folders and select an account that has messages, I can open a message then click Delete and it will bring up the next message. If there is no next message it brings up the last message in the list.

If I select Unified Folders and open a message then Delete, as described before, the Delete button will go faint but the message window will show the Deleted message and the deleted message disappears from the message list.


Go figure????

Tried to delete message with unified view enabled on 102.4.2 and I can't repro.

Yep. My tablet works fine. It is just my desktop that has this problem.

You are using 102.4.2. Works fine My tablet has 102.2.0 (32 bit)......."Thunderbird is up to date" Works fine My desktop has 102.6.1 (32 bit)....Thunderbird is up to date"???? Has the problem. The desktop has a 64 bit processor but a 32 bit version of TB.

I just went through the settings for the tablet and the desktop comparing step by step. I made both are the same. That didn't change anything.

Tried with Thunderbird 102.6.1 (64 bits) under Windows and can't repro either.

I don't know what else to do. I have been using TB on this desktop for over 7 years. It is just the last few months that this problem appeared. Back about 102.2.22

This shouldn't be rocket science.

I'm not sure what you mean. If you mean Troubleshooting mode I have done that many times both before and after I started this thread. Nothing helps.

Hardware acceleration was never on, and even if it was, I have been using Thunderbird on this computer for over 7 years and the problem just started a few months ago.

Also, back on Oct. 6 breezerabbit said he was having the same problem. I sent him a PM but haven't heard back.

Well, it has been fixed on my desktop computer (Windows 10, Thunderbird 102.7.7(32-bit)). Perhaps because of the upgrade from 102.2.22.

But now my tablet is doing it! Windows 8.1 Thunderbird 102.2.0 (32-bit). it says I have the latest version but the desktop has 102.7.7

I have been doing more trouble shooting. On my tablet where "delete" leaves the message window open, here is what is happening.

I can't seem to get Thunderbird to upgrade to a newer version. I see under Help/About, version 102.2.0 (32 bit) "Thunderbird is up to date". Then, every few days, running , I will get a popup asking to download a new version. I click download and go about my business. Soon I will get, "Restart to update to version 102.7.2" I click and TB closes.

But it never restarts. After a long while I open TB and it is still 102.2.0. And I have the delete problem.

Then a few days later I get the popup to update and the cycle repeats.
