Unwanted message tabs

When I double click on a meesage in the main screen, it opens in a new window. However, for the last few months, Thunderbird has been creating unwanted tabs for some (but not all) messages, across the top of the main screen. I then have to close each of these. I have looked at Options and switched the tab option off, as far as I can see. Have I missed something please?
