Dear Community,

I am trying to set up my organizational email address on Thunderbird. I am able to receive emails just fine. But when I try to send, I get an error message:

Sending of the message failed. An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: SendAsDenied; {redacted}@hotmail.com not allowed to send as {redacted}@lehman.cuny.edu; STOREDRV.Submission.Exception:SendAsDeniedException.MapiExceptionSendAsDenied; Failed to process message due to a permanent exception with message [BeginDiagnosticData]Cannot submit message. {redacted: a long string of letter, numbers, colons, commas, and spaces} [EndDiagnosticData] [Hostname={redacted}.PROD.OUTLOOK.COM]. Please check the message and try again.

I think the error may be due to one or both of these complicating factors: (1) I also have my Hotmail account set up on TB. I think both accounts use Office 365. (2) My institutional email address and domain are NOT the same as the username/domain I use to log into this email account. To log into my institutional email from a browser, I go to outlook.office365.com and enter my login credentials: {redacted}@login.cuny.edu. This takes me to my institution's SSO login page. From there, I enter my login credentials, and then I'm directed back to Office365. But my email address is {redacted}@lehman.cuny.edu.

Even though my @lehman.cuny.edu account is selected as the "From" address in TB, the error message suggests that I am attempting to send from my @hotmail.com account. Weird.

In searching for answers, I found this page, but I don't think it solves my problem: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1270491

BTW, I have tried a few different combinations of using the @lehman.cuny.edu or @login.cuny.edu names in the "User Name", "Account Name", and "Email Address" fields in the TB settings for this account. All result in similar error messages when I try to send an email from this account--or in some cases, losing the ability to receive messages too.

Here are the server settings I'm using in TB (I got these from the Office 365 settings after logging into my email account in a browser). IMAP Server name: outlook.office365.com Port: 993 Encryption method: TLS SMTP Server name: smtp.office365.com Port: 587 Encryption method: STARTTLS

I'm using: Thunderbird Version 91.9.1 Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS

Can someone help me sort all this out please? I'd be very grateful!

Chosen solution

Taking a closer look at the old support question linked in my original post, I was able to resolve my issue. Here are my additional contributions to help solve this kind of issue, which is complicated by the fact that my email address and user name for this account are different.

(1) I needed to manually add the SMTP server for my institutional email to TB's list: (i) open settings tab; (ii) in left panel list, scroll down to "Outgoing Server (SMTP)"; (iii) in right panel, click "Add..." button; (iv) enter details for my institutional email account, using the @login.cuny.edu user name as the "User Name"; (v) click OK.

(2) I needed to select the new SMTP entry I just created in Step 1: (i) in settings tab, in left panel list, select my institutional email account; (ii) in right panel, scroll to the bottom and for "Outgoing Server (SMTP):" select the new SMTP server I created. Note that this is what is described in the forum post in my first post, I just wasn't following the directions closely enough.

(3) I needed to enter my @lehman.cuny.edu email address in the "Email Address:" field for this account. To get to this field: (i) go to settings tab; (ii) in left panel, click on institutional account; (iii) in right panel, look under "Default Identity".

(4) I needed to enter my @login.cuny.edu user name in the User Name field. To find this field: (i) go to settings tab; (ii) in left panel, expand list underneath my institutional account and click on "Server Settings"; (ii) in right panel, see "User Name:" field.

So to summarize, I solved this issue by adding a new SMTP entry, selecting that entry for my new account, and being careful to add my email address or user name to the correct fields.

Hope that helps someone. :-)

Today, I also tried adding a separate SMTP server entry for my institutional email under "Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings". So now I have two separate entries for smtp.office365.com: one for my Hotmail account (my default server) and one for my institutional account.

Still, I am not able to send emails from my institutional account, and I get the same error message.

Any ideas?
