I NEED A NEW PASSWORD. I DON'T REMEMBER THE OLD ONE. I JUST UPGRADED FROM WINDOWS 7 TO WINDOWS 10. YES I USED A SEAGATE BACK UP BUT IT DIDN'T COPY ANY OF MY FOLDERS OR E MAIL OR ADDRESS BOOK OR ANYTHING. THE SAME THING WITH FIREFOX. I HAVE NO BOOKMARKS NOTHING. I GOT THUNDERBIRD ALL INSTALLED EXCEPT FOR THE PASSWORD. THERE'S NO PLACE FOR FORGOT PASSWORD. SO I CAN'T GET A NEW ONE.

Thunderbird is just an email client program running on your computer. It is not a server and does not host any of your email addresses. This means Thunderbird does not create nor modify any of your email address passwords. It just saves a copy of the one used to access a server for a particular email address.

To get a new password you have to try to logon to your webmail account for that email address using a browser. You will find that is where the 'Forgotten Password' link will display. Use it and follow instructions to get access to webmail account. Then reset the password. This is the password you then use in Thunderbird, so it can access the server.

HOWEVER..... When you upgraded from 7 to 10, was this on the same computer ? If yes, have a look on C: drive for a 'windows.old' folder. If Windows auto created that 'windows.old' folder then it is likely to contain your entire Thunderbird information. In 'windows.old' look for: C://Users/ User name/Appdata/Roaming/Thunderbird. Note : you may need to select the View' tab and select checkbox to show hidden files.

Do you see that 'Thunderbird' folder in the 'windows.old' folder ?

If windows did a restore/update and removed Thunderbird program, then you should see a 'windows.old' folder on the desktop and it will contain your old profile. It will get auto deleted by Windows Os after about a month, so you need to access it and rescue data.

If you have that 'windows.old' folder. Look in it for this 'Thunderbird' folder: C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\ Copy that 'Thunderbird' folder.

Please note: that 'windows.old' folder will get auto deleted by Windows OS after about a month, so it is important to get a copy of that Thunderbird folder.

Exit Thunderbird if it is running.

On computer access the 'Roaming' folder. You could type %Appdata% in search - see image below as guide to locate where 'Thunderbird' folder is located. C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming folder on computer Delete the new default 'Thunderbird' folder that was newly auto created when you installed and ran Thunderbird. Paste the 'Thunderbird' folder you copied from 'windows.old' folder into the 'Roaming' folder. So you are replacing the default new Thunderbird folder with the original one.

Start Thunderbird

NO TODD! UNFORTUNATELY THE TECH COULD NOT GET THE WINDOWS 10 TO GO ON SO SHE WIPED IT CLEAN. SHE PUT A FILE ON THE DESKTOP CALLED RECOVERED DATA, BUT THERE IS NO WINDOWS FILE IN IT. ALSO, THIS IS A NEW WINDOWS MAIN DRIVE C. I REQUESTED IT BECAUSE THE OLD ONE NEEDED MORE SPACE. THERE IS ALSO NO PLACE TO ASK FOR A NEW PASSWORD. I CAN'T LOG IN TO THUNDERBIRD. WHY DOES THIS HAVE TO BE SO DIFFICULT?

NOW, BEFORE I TOOK THE COMPUTER IN TO GET THIS UPGRADE I BOUGHT A SEAGATE BACKUP DRIVE. I BACKED UP EACH DRIVE INCLUDING THE MAIN DRIVE C. WHEN I GOT THE COMPUTER BACK I PUT ALL THE STUFF BACK ON THE COMPUTER. YESTERDAY I MADE A QUICK LAUNCH TO PUT ON MY TASKBAR. NOW WHEN I GO INTO THAT BACK UP DRIVE IT TAKES ME TO THE QUICK LAUNCH AND IT SHOWS MOZILLA THUNDERBIRD. WHEN I OPEN IT I GET THE SET UP YOUR E MAIL PAGE. SO THAT DOES NOT WORK EITHER. I WISH I WOULD HAVE KNOW HOW TO BACKUP ALL MY STUFF: ADDRESS BOOK, FOLDERS, E MAIL OUT OF THUNDERBIRD BEFORE I TOOK THIS COMPUTER IT. THERE'S NO OLD WINDOWS FOLDER.

Can I make a request..please stop typing using capitals as it's not so easy to read.

If you backed up all of the C: drive and then put it all back then it is worth looking for the following location to see what is stored.

When you start up Thunderbird, it is using a new empty profile, so it will ask you create a new existing mail account. But, if you have installed a newer version of Thunderbird than was previously used, it is possible the original profile exists - so let's check that out first.

  • On computer - bottom search type: %Appdata%

See image as guide.

  • Then select : %Appdata% app

A new window opens.

  • click on 'Roaming' folder
  • Click on 'Thunderbird' folder
  • click on 'Profiles' folder

It will list all your 'profile name' folders Make sure you have the View showing 'Details' and select checkbox 'hidden folders' post an image which shows the list of 'profile name' folders.

If you decide to just start again and create new mail accounts.

Before you create the mail account for an email address in Thunderbird, you need to be sure that you know what the password is for that email address.

Thunderbird is not the program nor location for setting a password, but it will need a password because that is required by the server you want to connect up.

Open a browser eg: Firefox, Edge, Chrome whatever you prefer. You have to get access to the webmail account. That is where the option to use 'Forgotten Password' is located. The email address you use may be provided by your internet service provider. You use their webpages to logon to webmail account.

I do not know what server you use for email address.

If it is a gmail email address then use this link for info: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/8494?hl=en-GB&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop

If spectrum (roadrunner, TWC, charter) use: https://webmail.spectrum.net/mail/auth

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, please tell me what is after the '@' in your email address eg: @servername.com and I will try to find you the web login page.
