Upon opening TB, I get:

"Enter your password for........on imap.google.com"

After entering it, I get the message:

"Login to server imap.google.com with username ,,,,, failed"

I am NOT a computer whiz, simply a user with minimal skills.

Can get to Tools, Account Settings, Privacy, but no "options"

Try the account at gmail.com to confirm the email password is working. That can help isolate whatever your problem is, Gmail or Thunderbird.
