Moved Thunderbird to new computer and "send" stopped working

Both computers are Dells running Windows 10. I have moved Thunderbird a number of times over the years. Not an expert but not unfamiliar. I followed the instructions for downloading the Thunderbird folder from the old computer and copying it to the new one.

When I activated Thunderbird, all the accounts were there and 1:1 with the old computer set up. Every thing was fine until I tried to reply to an email. It wouldn't send. Send button is dead.

I have been through the troubleshooting on Support Mozilla. The settings on the SMTP settings on the new computer are identical to the settings on the old computer. I get email from four different servers that I control for my clients. Their status has not changed, and I can't send from any of them.

I also notice that the spell checker is not automatically popping up upon send. I checked Preferences / Composition and "Check spelling before sending" is checked.

The only difference I see is that the old computer ran Thunderbird 91.2.0 (32 bit) and the new computer was running 91.2.0 (64 bit). After troubleshooting, i ran the upgrade to 91.2.1. It still won't send.

I have the same issue with Thunderbirds Not Sending emails. I tried all the steps in this article https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cannot-send-messages

But it still has issues. Hopefully, this gets solved. Thanks for posting your issue as it may get resolved quicker with more people talking about it.

For reference, here is my issue.. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/13549191

I checked the console. It's lit up in red error messages like these. Above my paygrade.

12 of these probably generated as I've tested while troubleshooting:

NS_ERROR_FILE_CORRUPTED: Component returned failure code: 0x8052000b (NS_ERROR_FILE_CORRUPTED) [mozIStorageService.openDatabase]

A few of these:

[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80520001 (NS_ERROR_FILE_UNRECOGNIZED_PATH) [nsIXPCComponents_Utils.readUTF8URI]" nsresult: "0x80520001 (NS_ERROR_FILE_UNRECOGNIZED_PATH)" location: "JS frame :: resource://gre/modules/L10nRegistry.jsm :: L10nRegistry.loadSync :: line 692" data: no]

If you have any Add Ons installed try disabling them and turning on 1 at a time. For my issue I mentioned I solved it, see below:

This Add-On was the issue: Send Later

Others reported the issue here: https://github.com/Extended-Thunder/send-later/issues https://github.com/Extended-Thunder/send-later/issues/389

I disabled it and everything worked perfectly. Just FYI for others if you have this add-on installed.

Take care, Mark.

Thanks, Mark. I don't have any addons installed.

I've spent two full days on this so far. As a stopgap so that I could get back to work, I transferred the profiles back to my old computer, thinking I could answer emails on the second machine. When I loaded them in and fired up Thunderbird, the "Send" function had stopped working on that installation too.

Jonponder - just to check a simple thing - the Send button does not become active until after the email has a recipient. Have you composed an actual message, with recipeint, subject and text?

Thanks, AgnesRM - Yes, I wish it were that simple, but I've tried dozens of times now troubleshooting with all fields filled in. The system behaves as if they're not filled in. For example, clicking spend does not invoke the automatic spell check.

I have seen a few similar reports on this forum, try searching to see whether any solutions have been found. I think one was related to the Send Later add-on - disable that if you have it.

Thanks again, AgnesRM. I think I've seen them all, including that one, which Mark mentioned above. I have no addons. I appreciate your help. My guess now is that something happens to old profiles - my main one is at least 20 years old - in the upgrade that corrupts them. As a stopgap, I copied the profiles back onto my original computer so that I could go back to work and when I got it all in place, the "send" on the Thunderbird installation on my old computer would not work either.

Generally Thunderbird separates profile from program so that the profile keeps working, but with some upgrades profiles do change when the structure changes. If your profile was for a 20 year old version of Thunderbird it would certainly break - but surely Thunderbird did update many times during that time, and the profile would be changed incrementally during some updates. If you have a safe copy of the profile that you copied over initially, and you can install the same version of Thunderbird you were using on the new computer, test 'send' works, then update it from that version, you might get this straightened out. Clearly something broke, and it may be that the original profile was modified when the newer version of Thunderbird was applied, in which case copying the current profile back to the other computer fails. As others have reported similar issues recently this seems fairly widespread under certain circumstances, let's hope the developers take note, and can find the cause! Meanwhile are you able to manage with webmail? This recent question includes a description of bringing the profile along through updates from an older version, from Toad-Hall. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1354827
