Why am I being nagged about installing Firefox. I have the latest version.

more options

Every time I open the browser, I am asked if I want to install Firefox. I already have the latest version. I answer "NO" and the same thing pops up the next time. I don't answer and the same thing pops up next time. This is really annoying!

Windows 10 Home, 64 bit.

There have been two updates (90.0.1 and 90.0.2). Could you check which one you're running? That's listed in the first table on the Troubleshooting Information page. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

You could try deleting any leftover update files from the following hidden folder:

C:\ProgramData\Mozilla\updates

You can paste that entire path into the Windows 10 search box and launch it that way, or turn on viewing of hidden files and folders and start from the C drive: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hidden-files-0320fe58-0117-fd59-6851-9b7f9840fdb2

Within that folder, Firefox creates a folder for each different build of Firefox you have installed (for example, separate folders for regular and beta versions of Firefox). As an example,

C:\ProgramData\Mozilla\updates\308046B0AF4A39CB

Within that folder, there should be a folder named updates. And within updates, there may be leftover folders such as 0 and downloading. You can remove those folders:

If I understand you correctly, there is no such folder named "0" and "downloading". There are two documents named "update-config.json" and "updates.xml".

You should look for a folder named 'updates'. In this updates folder you will find the mentioned '0' (zero) and downloading folders.

Note that there also might be a 'updated' folder at the main level that is used to prepare the update (i.e. it contains the full Firefox installation) and to make it possible to replace the new update and replace all the files on the next (re)start.

There is no "0" or "downloading" folder. There are merely the two files I mentioned.

Hi Eric, could you compare with the path in my screenshot? I think you didn't click in to the second updates folder (it's confusing that there are two updates folders...).

Windows hiding some file extensions like .ini doesn't help as well. The files you mentioned are at the root level where also the firefox.exe file is located. The '0' and 'downloading' folder are not located in this root level, but are in a separate 'updates' folder.

Now I don't have a clue what place to search. The https://user-media-. . . . . doesn't go anyplace. When I put in the exact URL shown in the window for File explorer, I get taken to Bing. When I put in the same thing but with the last element as I see it on my screen, I see a folder named "updates" and when I click on that, I get a stream of characters in WordPad and the string tells me nothing.

When I enter: 3-bar" menu button > Help > More Troubleshooting Information (menu bar) Help > More Troubleshooting Information type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

At that point I'm at a screen labeled "Troubleshooting Information". It looks as though it is meant to be sent off for analysis but nothing seems to send it.

There is no address bar to enter "about:support. The "about:support" is already entered in the address bar in the second physical row of the screen. When I click or press enter, nothing happens.

If I have missed the url or place to put it, please send it again with no choices . . .just the executable and place to put it.

That was the link to the image file of the screenshot. Here is an updated version showing the updates folder we're talking about:
