Mozilla TH Email accounts
Hello, All of my three email accounts have disappeared after updating to Mozilla 78.12.0. It was working fine but after switching the computer off last night and on this morning, I was presented with a new screen "Welcome to Mozilla Thunderbird" and "What to Set up", after all my messages and folders have gone. I have a back up and can restore from a profile that is over a month old, so I would be missing dozens of important messages I had saved, so why has this happened and what can I do about it? Also, while I am here, why does it take over 3 minutes from "first" switch on to open Mozilla? Help/advice would be much appreciated.

Launch TB in the (empty) profile, then Help/Troubleshooting, about:profiles. Is there another profile besides the current one that can be launched?
In the TH Profile folder, I have two Profiles, the default and the default-release. The 1 KB file "profiles" does not have the .ini at the end but opening it shows the same details of the two above: Profile Default Install and Profile Def-Release Locked=1, whatever that means. I cannot see any "prefs.js" file anywhere.
Did you launch the default profile from about:profiles, while default-release was the current profile in use?
No, I didn't get how to"launch TB in the empty profile"? And as I could not be without the server working, I launched a profile restore from my latest backup of one month ago and all is well again, except I haven't got any of my saved messages for the last four weeks. As mentioned before, I have two different profiles in the folder; a Default one and a Default-Release. Are they both needed? If not, which one should have all the information as I do not understand why the system "forgot" the profile/s have not been moved or deleted?
Launch TB, and if your data don't appear, you are running default-release. Open about:profiles, and click Launch profile for the default profile. Does your original data appear?
I have TH running normally now after I recovered the profile from my last backup dated 10/7/21. All my accounts, folders and saved mail are there, except the saved activity between 10/7 and 20/7/21. I followed your advice above, launched the profile and got all the folders etc, but the data/messages shown is the old activity for 2019 to 2020 and nothing else after that. I can live with the loss of 10 days worth of messages but I fear this incident may happen again and I cannot be doing backups every couple of days, so I need to know which is the correct profile to find/use and what to do with any other ones that I am sure may not be needed?
Look in the other profiles, which are subfolders of C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles and look at the dates on mbox files - the large files with no extension, named after folders. The mbox files are in the Mail/<popserver> and ImapMail/<imapserver> subfolders. If you copy an mbox file into the Mail/Local Folders location of the current, active profile, while TB is closed, the folder will appear under Local Folders in the Folder Pane when TB restarts.
All the files in the Mail <popserver> and ImapMail <imapserver> of the Default profile have a date of 20th. July 2021. The same files in the Default-Release profile are the old 2019 and 2020 dates. Can this profile be deleted? Or what do I do with it?
A profile can be deleted from about:profiles, but make sure another profile is set as the Default profile (even if 'default' doesn't appear in the profile name).
The default profile has no option to "delete" but the Default-Release has and so I have deleted it and I now have just one profile in the folder. TH is working fine. Before I deleted the above, I made a backup -just in case- and I am now on version 78.12.0. I cannot find the lost mail from 12/7 (the date of my previous back-up) and 20/7/21 when the empty screen appeared and I launched the profile restore, but I think I will leave things as they are now and hopefully, should it happens again, I will have a better idea of what to do before restoring. That said, it is a frustrating and time-consuming business and I hope someone is working towards correcting this annoying problem. I thank you for your time and patience.
