No website entered into the address bar works. Neither does trying to access anything by entering about:xxxxx (although about:support Keyboard shortcuts to access the same settings menus do not work either. This problem happened suddenly tonight. The back and forward arrows also don't work (although Troubleshooting Information came up when I selected it from the Help menu).

Edge and Chrome work just fine. I have tried deleting the cache, launching Firefox in safe mode, creating an alternate profile, refreshing Firefox, uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox, deleting the folders manually and reinstalling, deleting/reinstalling in Windows safe mode, rolling back Windows updates (one update had installed today; I tried rolling back several updates just in case), removing Firefox from the allowed apps in my firewall software (AVG Antivirus), and completely disabling AVG Antivirus.

Correction: about:profiles works.

Start Firefox using Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

As I mentioned, I tried starting Firefox in Safe Mode. I tried it again just now. Clicking on the option from Help in the menu closed Firefox but did not start it again. Every time I close Firefox now, it leaves processes running and if I try to relaunch I eventally get a pop-up (sometimes a pop-under) Firefox is already running, but is not responding. The old Firefox process must be closed to open a new window.

Opening in Safe Mode via shift-Firefox results in exactly the same problem. Please note that when I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox, it blew away all my extensions and customized settings (all of which had worked fine until last night).

Anything has been uninstalled recently?

  1. Enter this link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads
  2. From the section Visual Studio 2015, 2017 and 2019 download the following executable file: vc_redist.x64.exe
  3. Install this file
  4. Restart the computer and run Firefox

Thanks. I forgot to mention: when I tried deleting the folders and reinstalling, I got a pop up message saying that this dll was missing, so I reinstalled the dll before reinstalling Firefox.

Just to confirm: You did download and install the latest Visual C Runtime package and restart Windows?

Yes, I did.
