Open another instance of Firefox to isolate it from addons

more options

Hello,

I like Firefox unfortunately all browsers are so 1999... It is impossible to use without addons, if you browser internet a lot and have opened a lot of tabs and windows. I bumped into this article: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1155401 Saying: this will open another instance of Firefox. But nothing is bulletproof! So ask, if this will isolate me from addons, which I would open in first instance of Firefox.

Thanks for help.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes), any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem. If the problem goes away, that tells us one thing. If it does not, that tells us something else.

I want to have 2 instances of Firefox: in 1st: I want sign into accounts, without using addons to keep passwords safe! in 2nd: I want to browse - where I have a lot of tabs/extensions, without compromising 1st instance of Firefox

So if I run another instance of Firefox with addons (from my link), would it compromise default instance where I sign into accounts and don't want to have any addons installed? That's what I was asking.

No, profiles are separated. You can use two profiles at once, if you want. But using addons doesn't make your passwords unsafe.

IMPORTANT: Do not log into the same Firefox account in both profiles or your data will be shared between them through Sync!

OK thanks much, great answer!

Still is it even safe to install any extensions? I read these could contain rootkits and get even access to windows kernel! It is probably not safe to install any extensions!!! I don't understand why Firefox won't improve basic features like UI and hotkeys. It is compromising theirs goals. How is a browser secure, if users are forced to install at least 10+ extensions to even be able to use a browser?

And there aren't verified addons for addons you need... Also I had even 10m users addons on chrome, which caused PC to restart, or popular addon, which got infected by malware later. You can't trust any addons, addons are just stupid period!

Problems: - can't rename, re-arrange firefox windows - can't organize tabs into groups, or structures - can't ctrl+f when creating bookmarks, otherwise it is impossible if you have a lot of bookmarks to find particular folders! - can't create custom hotkeys!! - no session manager - no way to check which tabs are playing sound quickly! - no AD blocking by default and what not...

I don't understand how this is not apparent to anyone who surf internet a lot. Because these are apparent problems! These are all basic stuff. Today everyone is on internet, I would expect it have more features and better UI, hotkeys etc...

Here in support we don't have special influence over which new features get incorporated into Firefox. There are other places you could make your voice heard, such as:

As for whether extensions can contain a rootkit, I don't think so. Extensions can read and modify what happens in your browser, but that has little or no effect outside of the browser. Some extensions have a companion program, which obviously is a higher risk since it doesn't get any review.

I've written nearly all of my extensions because users needed a gap filled in Firefox's functionality. I wish they weren't needed. But I am confident that they are safe, and the question for you is whether you trust me and the software Mozilla uses to review my code.

TBH I still don't trust extensions. Malware is complex and it can infect anything today and even AA can't stop it. And these extensions I need - none is even screened for malware and it get infected later!

I didn't find in your list:

- highlighter - session manager (I currently backup sessionstore.jsonlz4 manually, didn't have time to make bat script yet) - tab manager (I tried workona) but it was bugged beyond belief

I found this open source site for addons, which has couple useful addons, but didn't find much about organization, more like nothing. So not sure, if I can trust it: https://add 0n.com/index.html

I read thousands of sites, I need highlighter, otherwise I Am gonna kill myself :D

(1) Could you describe in more detail what the highlighter extension should do? Or if there is one for another browser that you liked, which one was it?

(2) There are many session management extensions. This is my old list from last year:

Use database storage:

Use bookmark storage:

Bookmark storage is more robust in that Firefox backs it up regularly. However, having the extra data show up when you are searching your bookmarks may be annoying.

(3) What do you want the tab manager to be able to do?

1) I don't remember what I used in Chrome. I eventually gave up too. These addons: even if they are screened, then they are usually broken! But even if it could highlight text on pages, using 1 color and remember it after closing and re-opening Firefox. (more colors always better) That would be huge help!

2) Session Manager - nice this addon is screened for malware, they usually are not!

Bookmark storage: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/my-sessions/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/session-sync Are you confident these 2 are safe? Do they have open-source code out?

3) Sorting tabs into groups, perhaps with different color each: so they can be easily discerned.

Structured tabs: If I could structure tabs perhaps like bookmarks, so I could see what opened tabs in a window are related to! Example of structure: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/sidebery/

Changing position of Firefox windows on taskbar and renaming Firefox windows would be huge help - not sure if this is task for tab manager!

BTW I tried workona, but it was shady - verification link took me on http site, but then on https, that never ever happened to me before. And it didn't work, it was buggy as hell! Not sure if to trust it, doesn't have many users and it is not screened.

I don't use any of these kinds of extensions personally, so I can't give advice from personal experience. Hopefully you'll get some other suggestions. Two other community sites where you might get suggestions are:
