Hello!

My Firefox stopped working this evening and I can't figure out why. When I open it, it shows a tiny, blank window for a fraction of a second and does nothing. I did some digging and this is what I found.

- Firefox Safe Mode doesn't start - Profile Manager doesn't work - Opera has the same problem - Restarting my computer didn't work - Reinstalling didn't work - Restarting and Reinstalling didn't work - I don't have CCleaner so that's not an issue - I went into my OSDrive to hunt and delete every folder labelled Mozilla I could find and that didn't change anything on reinstallation - The link I used to download the installer is: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/

Any suggestions? I saw a forum post that suggested a faulty value somewhere in the Windows Registry (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser_will_not_start_up#No_Mozilla_applications_will_start), but the link it cites doesn't work anymore and I would prefer not to go Registry diving if I don't have to. Thanks and let me know if you need anything else.

Some problems occur when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

I just finished following the instructions you sent. I have McAfee as my Internet Security (computer came with a free year) and I removed the Firefox options from the "Internet Connections for Programs" panel. Unfortunately, there was no change and Firefox still does not open. I also made sure my computer was completely up to date but there was no change.

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Secure websites. Is the problem still there?

My computer is now in Safe Mode with Networking and Firefox opened. What do you mean by Secure Websites?

You can check for issues caused by a corrupted or incomplete Visual C++ installation that is missing runtime components (Redistributable Packages) required by Firefox, especially VCRUNTIME140_1.dll.

See "Visual Studio 2015, 2017 and 2019":

Any website address that starts with https://

Well, Firefox was able to run in Safe Mode with Networking but I couldn't visit any websites because WiFi is disabled in Safe Mode. I'm gonna try the Visual thing now.

I ran the x64 exe on the Visual Studio thing and Firefox was able to open for a few seconds before it stopped working again. Seems we are making progress.

Update: I turned off everything I could find in McAfee and tried to run Firefox without change, so I think McAfee isn't causing the problem.

Same thing happens with x86

Are you using any other protection programs?

I don't think so. I only have McAfee and the standard Windows Security.
