For the past two weeks my Thunderbird 87.0b3 [on linux] has been occasionally starting with a new blank profile. Can someone tell me why this has started to happen and how to prevent this? It seems to be since an update initially caused this, and since then it's happened three times.

The other question is why the update channel is shown as 'beta'? I need a stable install and don't wish to be updated with a beta versions. Can this be changed?

The current release version is 78. I have no idea how you come to have a V87 installed, but must assume you chose it as I am not aware of any Distribution that routinely offers Beta software with their stable releases.

When I run 'sudo apt policy thunderbird' it reports 78.7.1 and that was to point at which the problems started a few weeks ago. I hadn't knowingly selected anything - previously I was running 68.x without any issues and came to use my machine as usual and was prompted to set up new mail accounts and all previous content was not visible. Then I noticed the version update.

I don't understand why Thunderbird shows a different version to that reported with 'sudo apt policy thunderbird'. In Help/about it shows 87.0b3.

Anyhow, I've downloaded the latest version from the Release Channel and tried running this but It will not recognize my previous default profile - instead it has created two new ones. I've tried running' thunderbird --allow-downgrade' but I still get nothing - the profile is not visible. I was thinking all I needed to do was to remove the beta channel release and create a new launch icon on the desktop for the release update channel version, but it's not that straightforward.

I'm not familar with Linux - just a user - and I just need to get back to a stable situation. How can I get 78.8.1 to work with the profile that works with 87.0b3?
