I seem to have this message when I go Firefox options.

I did search on other past posts and they seem to deal with Avast and i did check my RegEditor and no entries under \Software\Policy (i.e. no Mozilla folders seen - unless hidden?!?)

Since this is my personal computer, it is very annoying to see this message and how do i get rid of it so I can feel good about my laptop?

Thanks Thomas

Hi Thomas.

This message usually comes from your security software. When you visit a website that's using HTTPS, your security software cannot see the contents of the website, so it can't scan it. To get around this, the security software enables a policy called ImportEnterpriseRoots to allow the software to handle the security certificates associated with HTTPS traffic.

Manually disabling this is usually not recommended, as you could risk breaking your security software and you would be leaving yourself open to potential threats. If you really want to disable it, there's often a setting in your security software to do so. This option would usually be called "HTTPS scanning" or something similar.

If you want to check and confirm that this is the cause of the message and that it's not something else, you can visit the about:policies page in Firefox (just type it in your address bar). That will show you exactly what policies are enabled. As I said, it's very common to have the ImportEnterpriseRoots policy active and (assuming you haven't manually enabled any policies yourself) that's probably the only one you will have.

As for the naming of the message, Firefox specifically references your computer being "managed by an organization" because Firefox policies are commonly used on business computers to limit and control aspects of Firefox so that they can't be modified by users.

Hope this clarifies things for you.

What security software do you have?

You can check the about:policies#active page to see whether policies are active (63+).

You can inspect the Mozilla and Firefox keys with the Windows Registry Editor in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and in HKEY_CURRENT_USER with the Windows Registry Editor to see whether GPO policy rules are active.

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Mozilla\Firefox\
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Mozilla\Firefox\

Note that the mere presence of the "Mozilla\Firefox\" key is sufficient to make Firefox display this notification, so if you have the Firefox key then remove it and only leave the Mozilla key or remove this key as well if it is empty.

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Mozilla\Firefox\ =>
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\
