I currently have anti-aliasing disabled, should I re-enable it or not? When it's disabled, ClearType is off, so ClearType Rendering Mode setting has no effect, correct? And if I were to play with ClearType Rendering Mode settings, where could I get a description of those modes--and also a description of "direct2d1.1", "cairo", "skia"? What are they? Another question is, if somebody suggests that I change ClearType settings, does that imply that there exists a setting in ClearType that causes it NOT to smudge letters?

I think that would be prefering cairo over skia:

The "azure" settings are currently set to "direct2d1.1,skia,cairo"--I don't have the slightest idea what that is, and what exactly should I set them to? Also, if I changed the wrong preference, I should revert it to the original, but that will enable ClearType, which will take me even further away from my goal of making text as good as it was in FireFox 22. Could you enumerate, in as much detail as possible, the exact settings that will make FireFox 52 text look like FireFox 22?

You've changed wrong preference, you need to change those two:
