I didn't used to receive this,but I keep getting the Keep getting "firefox can't update to the latest version" message on a pretty regular basis. I have downloaded and installed the latest copy a few times, but then I still get this message.I haven't tried uninstalling the browser in control panel, but I thought I'd check this first. Current version: 82.0.2 This is happening on my work machine (Microsoft Surface) running Windows 10.

Thank you Mike

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Note: Firefox comes in three or more folders on all computers. They are;

Maintenance: (Programs Folder) <Windows Only> Firefox itself: (Programs Folder) And two folders in the profile of each user on the computer for each Firefox profile for that user.

If you remove the Firefox folder, the user profiles would not be affected.

Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Note: Check Both Folders

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Look for, and remove any Mozilla or Firefox program folders. Do not remove the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

Do Not remove any profile folders.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

I removed the 2 mozilla folders mentioned under c:\program files and c\program files (x86) and installed a fresh install from the link provided as the instructions suggest. This morning I received the same error as before. I just installed it fresh yesterday, so I'm surprised to see it keep popping up like this.

I did notice the instructions didn't suggest removing the program via programs in windows like we normally do, would that have helped remove any/all instances. I'm using Windows 10 X64.

Any other ideas?

Thank you,

Mike

Hi, if you are using this in a company environment it's likely that they have some software which is blocking something. Perhaps your IT techs have changed something?

What Firefox version are you currently running (Help -> About Firefox) ?

The current release is Firefox 82.0.3 released a few days ago (November 10).

I am currently running version 82.0.2.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to make this message go away?

If you look at Options - near the top, does it say 'Your browser is being managed by your organisation' by any chance? If so, it's likely that your company has added a Policy which could be blocking updates.

Try temporarily disabling any antivirus software you have because a component in that could be disrupting updates.

I am in Options, but I don't see that setting that you're talking about. . is there a subheading it's under?

The current Firefox release is Firefox 83.0, see "Help -> About Firefox".

If you have a problem with updating then download and save the current release and do s clean reinstall.

Do a clean reinstall of the current Firefox release and delete the Firefox program folder before installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows Registry and settings in security software.

  • do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall the current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including personal data in profiles created by other Firefox versions

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (64-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (32-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • it is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you reinstall or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you keep having problems then you can create a new profile as a quick test to see if your current profile is causing the problem.
