I am the IT manager for a small company. I have a standard Firefox Profile that I update to users about once a year. During that time of course they change, but should mostly be bookmarks.

I have one user who has recently been having issues with Intuit\QuickBooks Online recently. For reasons that I can not figure out she is getting security challenges (Pick all the crosswalks) and being required to login in to sites that I can open just with (her) saved credentials on my PC using the exact same URL.

I am looking to understand if there are any settings that might impact this behavior.

Your ‘logged-in’ status is stored in special cookies. If the cookie is removed, you are logged out.

You may be in Private Browsing mode or told Firefox not to remember.

Type about:preferences#privacy<enter> in the address bar. The button next to History, select Use Custom Settings.

Turn off Always Use Private Browsing Mode Turn on Remember My Browsing And Download History At the bottom of the page, turn on Clear History When Firefox Closes. At the far right, press the Settings button. Turn on ONLY Cache and Form And Search History leaving the others off.

Thanks for the reply She already had private browsing off but was deleting all history. Changes made and she will update me tomorrow on how it goes.

Details like websites remembering you (log you in automatically) are stored in a cookie.

You can use these steps to make a website recognize and remember you:

  • create a cookie allow exception with the proper protocol (https:// or http://) to make a website remember you
  • use "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" to let cookies without allow exception expire when Firefox is closed
  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security
Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Permissions"

Firefox 82+ comes with a "Redirect Tracking Protection" feature to purge tracking cookies for websites that haven't been visited recently automatically, so if you clear the history then there are no visits and Firefox can clear cookies. You can disable the feature to purge tracking cookies automatically via the about:config page.

Another possibility is to make sure you do not use "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear the browsing history or otherwise clear the history as this feature currently uses recent history visits.

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the Browsing History
  • do not clear the Cookies
  • do not clear the Site Preferences
  • clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exceptions for passwords and other website specific data
  • clearing "Cookies" will remove all selected cookies including cookies with an allow exception you may want to keep
