Duplicated file downloads in Linux in different partitions

I use Linux Mint with separated root and files partitions. I always select the downloads to be saved in the files partitions, but a copy is also saved in the root. I discovered this when I clicked in the "open containing folder" icon in the downloaded files list. Is this a bug or a setting? How can I make just one copy of the file? Thanks!
