Firefox uses GBs of data in background

On three nights, while I was sleeping, firefox burnt through 0,5 to 1GB of data of my cellphone data usage plan. Although this was reported as a bug four years ago, the issue is still open. I appreciate Mozilla/Firefox, but this is unacceptable. It is costing me €15 in three days. And that money isn't even going to Mozilla but to my data provider.

I need to voice somewhere that this gave me serious reason to consider dropping the use of Firefox mobile. The above thread provides a workaround, but this shouldn't be solved by a workaround; it shouldn't happen period.
