Email attachments cause "Thunderbird has stopped working" (win8)

I cannot attach any image or file to Thunderbird emails using the attachment function. I get a message that says "Thunderbird has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem" then I get "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I had this happen before many years ago, and it was related to the file folder I was using to get the attachment. when I used a 'higher' directory, the problem disappeared.

However, I have used the current folder before and it was fine until yesterday. I am using Windows 8 and tried disabling both Windows Defender and Windows Firewall. It didn't make any difference. Can I change the file directory the attachment app looks in automatically (in this case it's the last one I used)? I can't find any setting for this.

It's obviously a security glitch with the attachment function, because I can manually move images into the email body, but this won't work with files that are not graphics (such as pdf). Thanks.

Chosen solution

I'm using Windows 8, so this advice may not work for my computer.

>>Applies to: Windows 8.1Windows RT 8.1<<

Also, I have a standard Win 7 desktop ap, since I hate the side tools (or whatever they're called). But I know where the Settings are. I can try to reboot in safe mode anyhow, and cross my fingers.

My drafts folder is empty on all accounts (I rarely use that function).

I suspect this problem occured when I upgraded to the most recent Tbird the other day (68.10). However it says it's 32 bit. It should be 64 for this computer. Could this be causing the problem? The recent Firefox upgrade is 64 bit, which is correct.

For the record, the problem was what I suspected, the folder directory being accessed from the Thunderbird Attachment option (i.e. the last one I used before the problem occurred). Something in the new upgrade causes this problem in deep directories (and this happened before in very much older versions). A glitch, obviously. So I did what I did before. I moved the folder causing the crash and the attachment option reverted to a folder I had used before that (I assume from history), one much higher in the directory. In older versions of Thunderbird, it was possible to change the folder accessed by default. If a default one didn't exist, it would revert to the root or user directory. That would be a good solution again. So my attachment function now works. I suspect this could be done for any directory causing a crash. This is a far simpler solution than doing a reset in safe mode. It might be a good idea to allow the user to change the default attachment directory manually, as used to be the case. Thanks for your help, though. Maybe this solution will help others.
